Flooring Trims & Stair Nosings

uPVC and Aluminium Stair Nosings (stair edgings) help to make a stairway safe. There is usually a slip resistant stair part fitted onto the nose of each step, they help to clearly define the steps on a stair and it is important to use a contrasting colour to the stair floor covering that has been chosen. They also serve to protect the edges of the steps and the floor covering on the stairs, reducing the amount of wear and tear. In recent years it has become common practise to use a contrasting high viz colour insert on the top step and bottom step of each flight of stairs to help the visually impaired identify when a flight of stairs starts and finishes or changes direction.

These features have the benefit of helping to make a stair safer by reducing the risk of an overstep or fall, and are part of the guidelines contained in the Building Regulations (K&M), BSi documents and a BRE paper that embody the requirements of the Equality Act (2010).

Selecting the correct aluminium stair nosing (stair edging) for a given application depends on several factors. This is where the advice of your flooring contractor (Durham Flooring) can help you assess the following factors;

  • Gauge (thickness) of stair floor covering
  • shape to match step profile
  • Dimensions
  • tread cover
  •  colour and LRV difference.
